My goal has been to post weekly, but the next post in my current series needs a little more time marinating. So today you get a poem, the first complete poem I’ve written this year, I think. I started following some poetry accounts on Substack, and saw some poetry prompts, and wrote this with almost no revision in about 10 minutes. It was fun to write poetry again.
I think it’s pretty self-explanatory. If not, either you need to learn to read or I need to learn to write poetry!
Probably the latter.
Mercy
There’s a tiny little cross
With a little light at night
O’er a mound beneath the thistles,
Purple flowered by lacy white.
And they stand above a hole
And a pathway overgrown,
And a teeny tiny box,
A baby’s only home.
A backwards paper nine
By brothers’ hands was placed.
Weeks was markered on
And weedy flowers in a vase.
Her body never weighed
More than the tears we cried,
And if not for hope in heaven
Our joy would not survive.
An Aldi box of food,
A text, a hug, a cry
The church our heav’nly comfort
Till every tear was dry.
And on an evening’s walk
By that small light we see
The kindness of our God,
The resting place of Mercy.
